Among the oldest buildings in Delhi and one with exceptional architecture and design is the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church, Delhi. Sacred Heart tops the list of the most famous and followed churches in Delhi with Roman Catholic affiliation. The church was built in the year 1930 and is established in an area of 14 acres. Two other buildings, St. Columba’s School and Convent of Jesus and Mary School are also located in the same premises.
History of Sacred Heart Church, Delhi
The church was founded by Father Luke who was a member of the Franciscan first order which was founded by St. Francis of Assisi. The lead was taken by St. Francis and Agra’s Archbishop in the year 1929 to build this church.
Famous revolutionary Dr. E. Vanni laid the foundation stone of this church in the year 1929. The church is a perfect example of societal contribution. The altar of the church was gifted by Sir Anthony de Mello made of pure marble and is a masterpiece. The British Colonial officers financed the whole project while Agra's Archbishop gifted the altar furniture, vestments, and a huge bell.

Architecture of the Sacred Heart Church, Delhi
Henry Medd, a famous British architect designed the Sacred Heart Church predominantly on Italian Architecture. The interior of the church is decorated with a curved roof at an impressive height, the frontage comprises a canopy supported by white pillars and the entrance is adorned by circular turrets which rise above the roof of the church. The floor of the church is made of polished stone.
A huge fresco is located behind the marble altar which depicts the last supper. Towards the left is a large statue of Virgin Mary and alongside is a huge crucifix, beside the Chapel.
Services and Events at Sacred Heart Church, Delhi
The Sacred Heart Church is famous for its Christmas and Easter celebration and regular services which are conducted here. Every day during morning and evening, the Holy Mass is celebrated. People from different places come here to see the most famous Christmas Vigil Service and Feast of Holy Family of Nazareth just an hour before the Christmas Eve midnight.
The church also celebrates various cultural and social programs throughout the year.
The famous Bangla Sahib Gurdwara is just a few steps away from the Sacred Heart Church.
Entry fees and timings to visit the Sacred Heart church, Delhi
There is no entry fee to visit the church and help during the masses or pray to god and show gratitude. The church remains open on all days of the week from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm.
