Millennium Park also known as Indraprastha Park is a popular weekend picnic spot in the heart of New Delhi. It was established in 2004 by the Delhi Development Authority. The lush garden was created over an area of 34 hectares by transforming a landfill site.

Delhi Development Authority renovated the place into an eco-friendly children’s playground cloaked with lush green grass and perfectly manicured trees. The bougainvillea garden in the northern part of the park adds to its beauty. Millennium Park also attracts visitors with its mesmerizing water pool decorated by small lights. The vibrant flower beds and glistening fountains add to the beauty of the park.

The park also houses a vast arena or amphitheater, which was constructed in union with Sahitya Kala Parishad to arrange different cultural programs. Another important attraction is the World Peace Stupa, located within the premises. Also known as the Vishwa Shanti Stupa or the World Peace Pagoda, it was built under the convergence of the Lt. Governor of Delhi and monks of Nipponzan Myohoji under the guidance of the 14th Dalai Lama. The Japanese garden near the stupa is a peaceful place, ideal for relaxing and meditating.

Located centrally, the park offers respite from the bustle of the city and is well connected by bus and metro to all parts of the city. It draws many tourists as it is located near the prominent tourist attractions of Delhi like Humayun’s Tomb, Akshardham Temple, India Gate, Connaught Place, and Jantar Mantar. There are several food courts around the park offering various mouth-watering snacks and local delicacies.

History of Millennium Park, Delhi

Millennium Park was a landfill site in the heart of the city. It was transformed into a breathtaking landscape by the DDA in 2004, as per the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. The 3 kilometers long stretch was cleared to free up a total space of 3.4 hectares, which was then converted into a verdant park. The stinking garbage dumping site became the Indraprastha Park, offering a breath of fresh air to the city.

Millennium Park in Delhi features well-maintained lawns, beautiful flower beds, and a refreshing water pool. The 30 feet high Shanti Stupa in the park is a beautiful structure built in white marble. The large dome-shaped structure is the highlight of the park. A golden spire and Buddhist inscriptions adorn the dome. It has a diameter of 37 meters and houses the relics of Buddha donated by the Dalai Lama. The statue of Buddha adds to the serenity and positivity of the place.

Entry Fee and Timings of Millenium Park, Delhi

Millenium Park is open from 6:00 am to 7:15 pm on all days of the week. The entry fee to visit the park is INR 50 for adults and INR 25 for children.

There is no camera fee but professional camera photography is not allowed.

How to reach Millennium Park, Delhi

Located in the center of the city, the park is easily accessible by road and lies close to the Indraprastha Metro Station.

By Car- The park has 3-4 entry points which make it accessible from different roads around it including the Sarai Kale Khan Road, Bhairon Marg, Nizamuddin Road, and Outer Ring Road.

By Bus- Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Bus station is hardly 1 kilometer away from the park. You can also take a bus from anywhere in the city and get down at the Indraprastha Park Bus Stop right outside one of the entry gates of the park.

By Metro- You can easily reach the park through the Metro train as well. The nearest Metro station is Indraprastha Metro Station on the blue line. The park is around 7 kilometers from the Metro station. You can catch a bus from the Metro station or book a cab to reach the park.

By Cab- You can book a private cab from top car rental companies in Delhi to reach Millennium Park.
