Cathedral Church of the Redemption, also famously known as the Viceroy Church, is one of the most famous churches in the capital. Embraced between the Parliament house, Jaipur column and Rashtrapati Bhawan (earlier known as Viceroy House), this church holds a strong heritage dating back to British Rule times. The church was built to be visited by the then presiding viceroy by famous architect Henry Medd.

History of Cathedral Church of the Redemption

The Cathedral Church of the Redemption was built in the year 1935 with its foundation stone laid in the year 1927. The church is a part of the Delhi diocese which is a district under the pastoral care of a bishop in the Christian Church under the Church of North India.

The inspiration behind this church is Venice's Palladio's Church of II Redentore. The history of this church can be traced back to the 1900s. It took eight long years to build this church which was built in the Lutyen style.

Built under the viceroyship of Lord Irwin, this church was popularly called as Viceroy church due to Lord Irwin’s utmost belief and admiration for this place.

Architecture of Cathedral Church of the Redemption

Henry Medd was a student of Lutyen school of architecture which reflects in most of his works and Cathedral church of redemption as well. The church is built in such a manner that even harsh summers do not hinder the serene and moderate temperatures inside the premises. There is a lot of resemblance with the Free Church in Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Cathedral church of redemption is well known for its beautiful interiors. The exteriors, however are quite simple, made with red sandstone. On the inside, there is a silver cross gifted by Lord Irwin. Built as the center of Anglican workshop, Cathedral church of redemption is visited by common followers and dignitaries as well.

The outer look of the church resembles a birthday cake with layers topped with a candle. The designs and deep-cut openings allow filtered rays of the sun lighting and enlightening the church and its disciples. There are tinted and colored glass windows which further personify the beauty of this church.

The exteriors are reflective of Lutyen architecture whereas the interiors are more inclined towards the English neo-classical style of design. Loaded with dark wooden panels and other detailing, the interiors of Cathedral church of redemption are a sight to catch.

Entry Fee and Timings to visit Cathedral Church of the Redemption

There is no entry fee to visit the abode of God. The church remains open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on all days of the week.

The summer service timings are:
8:00 am, 9:35 am and 11:15 am.

The winter service timings are:
8:30 am, 10:05 am and 11:45 am.

Note: The services are offered in three languages- English, Hindi and Tamil.

How to Reach Cathedral Church of the Redemption

The Cathedral Church of redemption is located in one of the poshest areas of Delhi. Close to Rashtrapati Bhawan, the church is present on the Church Road, North Block, Rakab Ganj, New Delhi. The easiest and hassle-free way to reach Cathedral church of redemption is by metro. The closest metro station is Central Secretariat on the yellow line.

If you are traveling by road to Delhi in a bus, your destination is Maharana Pratap Inter-State Bus Terminal. All buses come till ISBT Kashmiri Gate from where you can take the DTDC bus line number 433 and 460 to reach Rashtrapati Bhawan which is just 800 meters away. Private taxis are also available at the ISBT.

If you are traveling by train to Delhi, get down at the New Delhi Railway Station. You can hire a taxi cab from the railway station to the Rashtrapati Bhawan which is just 6.9 km away or travel by metro from NDLS to Central Secretariat on the Yellow Line.

If you are traveling by air, Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest one 11.6 km away. You can hire a private taxi from the airport to reach the Cathedral church of redemption.
